  Pregnancy Test
The pregnancy test takes place in our Centre 14 days after egg retrieval by taking blood in order to measure human chorionic gonadotrophin (b-HCG).
The result is made known as early as in the afternoon of the same day. If it is positive, a transvaginal ultrasound scan is schedulled after two weeks in order to view the embryo(s).
Pregancy following IVF is in no aspect different than any other type of pregnancy, therefore there is no need for any particular precautions. At this point it should be pointed out that any pregnancy, following either in vitro or natural fertilisation, is unfortunately subject to a 10-15% miscarriage rate.
The reasons for this are usually unknown, even though they are often attributed to life-incompatible chromosomic abnormalities in embryos.
This situation cannot be predicted or treated with medication, while it occurs more frequently in pregnant women of a higher age.
If the test is negative, our firm belief is that the overall attempt should be reviewed with you in detail and future prospects should be thoroughly examined. In principle, a couple maximises their chances for success following a maximum number of 3 - 4 serious attempts, in which case the success rate is as high as 65 - 70%. We are thus against any excessive number of failed attempts (that is, more than 5 - 6 attempts); in such cases, the couple's medical history and their prospects should be thoroughly analysed and the most appropriate solution should be suggested.

Moreover, we always recommend an interim period of 2 -3 months between any two attempts. Such a period is necessary for the couple's psychological and physical recovery.

In any case, however, please feel free to talk to us about your concerns and your thoughts, or to consult our psychologist.
